In the competitive world of eCommerce, your shipping strategy is one of the biggest levers you have for attracting and keeping customers. This guide covers both the strategy — why a flat-fee-below / free-above model works so well — and the practical steps for setting it up in your BeNimble store.
Why Your Shipping Strategy Matters
Customers value transparency and simplicity in shipping costs. Offering a flat fee for orders under a certain amount lets customers anticipate their total without surprises, and that predictability reduces cart abandonment, which is frequently triggered by unexpected shipping costs appearing at checkout. Simplifying this single part of the experience can meaningfully improve conversion rates.
A dual-tiered rule also nudges customers to spend more to qualify for free shipping. For example, if you charge a R100–R150 flat fee on orders under R750 and free shipping above R750, a customer planning to spend R500 may well add items to cross the threshold. This lifts your average order value (AOV) and overall sales through the simple "spend more to save more" principle.
At BeNimble, close to 68% of our customers use the flat-fee / free-shipping model and see higher-than-average AOVs and conversion rates.
The headline benefits are:
- A higher average order value.
- Improved conversion rates through transparent pricing.
- Staying competitive by meeting the expectations set by market leaders.
How Shipping Works in BeNimble
BeNimble separates shipping into two parts. Shipping Rules determine how much a customer is charged at checkout, and these are configured per region under two tabs: South Africa (your domestic rule) and Rest of the World (international). Shipping Zones let you group international countries and apply rules to them. Both are found under Store Settings → Shipping Rule in the portal.
Reviewing Your Current Rule
Go to Store Settings → Shipping Rule. The South Africa tab shows your current configuration at a glance — your Free Shipping Order Value (and whether it is active), your Current Rule (for example, Preferred Courier Rate), and any Subsidise Amount. To make changes, click Change Shipping Rule.
Choosing a Shipping Rule
The Shipping Rule Update screen presents a free-shipping threshold field at the top, followed by your choice of underlying rule. Remember to click Save Shipping Rule when you are done — changes are not applied until you save.
Free Shipping Threshold
At the top, the Order Value for Free Delivery field is where you implement the model described above. Enter the amount above which delivery becomes free (for example, 750). Any order that meets or exceeds this value ships free, regardless of the rule below it; orders under the threshold fall back to the rule you have selected. Leave the field empty to disable free shipping (the minimum value is 1).
Flat Shipping Rate
Selecting this option reveals a single Flat Shipping Rate to Charge field. The amount you enter is charged on every order at checkout, anywhere in South Africa, regardless of delivery area. Setting it to 0 gives free delivery nationwide; setting it to 100 charges a flat R100.
Combining a flat rate here with a free-shipping threshold above is exactly how you build the "flat fee below, free above" model.
Courier Rates
This option charges customers live rates pulled directly from your preferred couriers based on the delivery address and total order weight. Your preferred couriers are those you have activated under Courier Settings with "Show on Checkout" enabled.
BeNimble does not control these rates — they come from the couriers, so any discrepancies must be taken up with them. Rates are based on charge weight, which is the greater of the actual or volumetric weight, so it is important to set accurate weights on your products; if no weight is entered, the system defaults to 0.1 kg. If a courier returns no rates, the customer sees a "No shipping rates could be found" message.
Advanced Shipping Service Levels
For more granular control, you can define multiple named service levels — for example Economy, Express, and Same Day — each with its own description, delivery timeframe, and insurance setting.
Within each service level you set rates per zone (Local, Main, Regional), choosing a rate type for each:
- FlatRate – A fixed amount.
- FormulaRate – A base amount plus a per-kg charge over a weight threshold (e.g. base R100 plus R10/kg over 2 kg).
- NotOffered – Disables that zone for this service level.
Use Add New Service Level to create more, and the edit and delete controls to manage existing ones.
Setting Up International Shipping Zones
For deliveries outside South Africa, use the Rest of the World tab, where you create Shipping Zones. The Shipping Zone form includes:
- Zone Name (e.g. Europe).
- Website Description shown to customers.
- Add Country – Type a country name, select it from the autocomplete suggestions, and repeat to add as many countries as the zone should cover.
You then set a Free Shipping Order Value for that zone (set to 0 to not offer free shipping), choose a Rule of either Flat Rate or Order Weight, and enter the corresponding Flat Rate amount. Click Save Shipping Zone to store it.
Calculating Your Free Shipping Threshold
For established stores, analyse your real sales and shipping data. Work out your average order value and average shipping cost over a period, decide on a target profit margin, and use those figures to set a threshold — then refine it against actual performance.
For new stores without historical data, estimate your average basket size from industry benchmarks and competitor analysis, get quotes from several couriers to estimate average shipping costs, and choose a target margin (20% is common).
Worked Example for a New Store
Assume an average basket of R500, an average shipping cost of R50, and a 20% target margin. The threshold is calculated as:
Threshold = (R500 × (1 + 0.20) + R50) ÷ (1 + 0.20) ≈ R541.67
Round this to a practical figure such as R550 or R600. This is a starting point — adjust it as your store grows and you gather real data.
Flexibility With Couriers
A key advantage of the flat-fee / free-shipping model is that you are not tied to a single courier's quote. You can adapt quickly to market changes, negotiate better rates, and switch providers without disrupting what the customer sees at checkout. BeNimble supports integration with multiple couriers with real-time rate comparison and tracking, so you keep both flexibility and reliability.
Conclusion
A flat fee on smaller orders combined with free shipping above a sensible threshold delivers a clear win-win: happier customers, higher average order values, better conversion, and operational flexibility.
In BeNimble, you build this in minutes under Store Settings → Shipping Rule by entering a free-shipping threshold and pairing it with a flat rate, courier rates, or advanced service levels — and refining it over time as your data grows.
